SANTIAGO, Chile - A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake (500 times stronger than Haiti)  struck Chile early Saturday, collapsing buildings, killing at least 16 people and downing phone lines. President Michele Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile and said the death toll was rising.

Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

Team HeyAZ will keep Chile and the surrounding affected areas in our prayers.

The Chili earthquake is equivalent to the "Big One" . Many fear the death toll will be in the thousands, but not as bad as Haiti. I suspect earthquake prone Chili has higher earthquake standards. I hope my prediction is on the high side & that loss of life will be far lower.
